I was watching tv a few days ago and the movie “Dirty Work” came on. This comedy from 1998 is a gem and also one of Chris Farley’s last movies. I honestly don’t know why I like the film so much. The plot is dumb and predictable but for some reason there are certain seasons in it that I still find hilarious such as the fight in the bar where the wrong song is selected, the dead hookers in the back of a vehicle, etc… I have probably watched this movie ten or so times and I still laugh my ass off whenever I see it. Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange are hilarious in it.
Here’s a clip from the movie:

It’s Easter time so I’m in a hurry for this post. There are some directors and writers in Hollywood that write up these B movies before blockbusters are released with similiar titles to fool people into watching them. Some examples are “Snakes on a Train“, “The DaVinci Treasure“, “Transmorphers” and “I Am Omega“. This must piss off Hollywood execs.
Here’s the trailer for “I Am Omega”. It actually doesn’t look too bad in my opinion.

Apparently there is a “leaked” Kristin Davis sextape according to WWTDD.com. It seems like so many celebrities have these tapes and for some reason they are found right before something is released to garner publicity. In this case it’s the Sex and the City movie. I don’t think many guys are going to see it and if they do it is with their girlfriend. I had the unfortunate opportunity to watch this show because my girlfriend at the time was obsessed with it. I personally thought nothing could get more painful to watch than the show “Friends” but I was wrong.
It seems like celebrities are using sex tapes to get their washed up careers back into the spotlight (or to get into the spotlight). For examples, see Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, China, etc… It just seems like a “coincidence” that this video suddenly emerges right before the release of the bound to be shitty Sex in the City movie. Or maybe I am just too much of a pessimist.

The 80th Academy Awards took place last Sunday (February 24th, 2008) and once again I did not watch them. In all honesty, I can’t remember the last time I watched them. Probably it was when I had my stupid little crush on Anna Paquin (like I wrote about here) so that was 10-11 years ago.
It’s not that I don’t like movies as I watch them quite often. I’m not anti-Hollywood either and don’t only watch indie flicks like Gummo. I just hate awards ceremonies. The last awards ceremony I watched was probably the MTV Music Awards and I believe that it was 1993 as Aerosmith’s “Get a Grip” album was nominated for many awards.
For me, the Oscars are not about the films but for the people who were involved, mostly the actors and actresses, to show off how pretty they look. It’s almost like graduating from High School: Most people don’t give a shit about the hard work or cheating they did to graduate but rather about how pretty they look and how they are going to get shitfaced afterwards.
Also it might be because movies are so easy to watch before they even are released on DVD that part of the magic is gone. Wired.com recently had an article about how “148 out of the 151 films selected for an Academy Award from 2003 to 2007 have cropped up online”.

Last night I watched Blue State and was surprised that I enjoyed it. The plot according to IMDB.com is “BLUE STATE is a romantic comedy about a disgruntled Democrat who actually follows through on a drunken campaign promise to move to Canada if George “Dubya” Bush gets re-elected. Before watching the movie I saw this plot outline and I was initially turned off from it. It seemed to me that it would be another Bush bashing movie which at this point has almost become cliched. I don’t like the guy either, but be original with bashing him.
While the movie was a romantic comedy with the predictable ending I still liked it. Maybe because Anna Paquin was in it? I had a crush on her when I was nine or ten and The Piano came out. I have no clue on why I had the crush.
The characters move to Canada and like I somewhat eluded to before in another blog post, the Canadians in the movie act like they are better than Americans. One of the characters mentions how all 300 million Americans are dumb because they voted for Bush. While I realize this is a movie and stereotyping, I often hear people bashing the United States but if any criticism towards Canada is brought up they reply with the “if you don’t like it, leave” argument. I’ll probably anger some people saying this but often times I think Canada is turning into America Junior in the sense that business interests are coming before peoples interests more and more it seems. Maybe that’s the reason I liked Blue State.
