End of the Semester

April 9, 2008

Today is the last day where we have to post blogs for this class assignment.  I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed this assignment and it was a nice experience/challenge to try and write something new every few days.  I think I might continue writing even though it may not be in this blog.  Hope everyone had a good semester.

Dirty Work

April 8, 2008

I was watching tv a few days ago and the movie “Dirty Work” came on.  This comedy from 1998 is a gem and also one of Chris Farley’s last movies.  I honestly don’t know why I like the film so much.  The plot is dumb and predictable but for some reason there are certain seasons in it that I still find hilarious such as the fight in the bar where the wrong song is selected, the dead hookers in the back of a vehicle, etc…  I have probably watched this movie ten or so times and I still laugh my ass off whenever I see it.  Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange are hilarious in it.

Here’s a clip from the movie:

Whatever Happened to Skee-lo?

April 7, 2008

It seems like almost everyone has got a shitty gift at one point in their lives.  While my grandma has bought me some cds that surprised me (such as Sublime’s self-titled album) she also had bought me a few cds which I initially thought were jokes.  If you are reading this blog I’m pretty sure you know the album is Skee-lo’s “I Wish”.

I remember not minding the song when it came out but the rest of the album is horrible.  It’s almost like a parody of a rap album.  It seems like Skee-lo hasn’t done much since this album came out in 1995.  He released an album in 2000 and that’s about it.  Maybe I’m being optimistic but I think Skee-lo’s busy in the studio crafting what he believes to be the next “Pet Sounds“.  It’s more likely that it will have more in common with “Metal Machine Music” though.

Here’s the video in all it’s uhh… ‘glory’:

End of Semester

April 6, 2008

It’s nearing the end of the semester and I don’t know if I’m really looking forward to it.  I’m normally happy when school is done and I can go work and make some money.  However this year I’m taking a summer semester as I need two more classes to get my degree.  I haven’t taken summer classes since I was in a tech program 5-6 years ago and I didn’t like them.  The classes were fine but it was annoying that my friends were going out and travelling and I wasn’t able to because of school.  I think I’m also nervous about what’s going to happen in the next few months involving school.  I have three choices for school: Medicine Hat College, University of Alberta and University of Lethbridge.  Although I would prefer U of L or MHC, I think I might end up only being accepted at U of A.  Where ever I go, I still have two more years of school before I am done.

NES Game Prices

April 5, 2008

As I mentioned in other blogs I grew up with Nintendo.  It could be argued that it was pretty much a babysitter for me (out of my own choice).  Looking back, I’m surprised I am not more out of shape as from Grade 1 – Grade 8 all I really did was play video games.  Now with emulation it’s almost as bad seeing as I can play all these games I didn’t have a chance to as a kid on my Xbox.  But I’m older and much wiser.

Anywho, I found this website called Video Game Price Charts which shows how much certain video games go for.  Being a Nintendo nerd I went to the sections for NES games and SNES games.  I’m pissed off at myself because I gave these games away to my sister and tossed out the boxes and instructional manuals for them a few years ago.  Like Zombies Ate My Neighbors is selling for $15 and Super Mario Kart is selling for $22.  I bought both of these games for less than that.  I could have made money, damn it.  I guess it’s time to keep all my game boxes from now on.

Atmosphere – Strictly Leakage

April 4, 2008

Atmosphere has a cd available for download on the Rhyme Sayers website titled “Strictly Leakage”.  Here is the link to the page where you can download the album (and also check out their new single “Shoulda Known”).  Scroll down a bit and you will see the link to grab “Strictly Leakage”.  While the album title is a bit odd (<insert feminine hygiene joke here>) I really enjoyed it.  Most of the tracks have a funky vibe to them which I love.  I think I have an odd attraction to rap songs that use horns and guitar stabs.  It kind of reminds me of DJ Shadow’s School House Funk albums.

I mean how can you not these lyrics from the song “The Things That Hate Us”:

“As American has herpes and hot dogs/Got lost between the mustard and hot sauce/Unprotected sex with that one you just met/You ain’t even got all your Hep shots yet”

damn, heh.

“Aesopian’s Totally Awesome Journal”

April 3, 2008

Although it hasn’t been updated in a while, I’m a huge fan of Aesopian’s Totally Awesome Journal.  It is a blog that covers brazilian jiu jitsu by providing lessons (through pictures and videos).  Also it has reviews of various seminars that the blogger has attended, books and videos relating to this topic as well as personal events in the bloggers life revoling around jiu jitsu.

My only minor complaint about the site is that a lot of the time it covers techniques that use the gi and I train without one.  However, this is such a slight complaint as many techniques he shows (with the exception of gi related chokes) can be adapted in some ways to no gi rolling.

Also I really liked this posting in which he linked various positions bjj positions together.  Kind of reminds how Eddie Bravo does this in his books with regards to his techniques.

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace

April 2, 2008

I was pointed to a short lived British tv series a few days ago and really enjoyed it.  Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace only lasted six episodes but apparently it has became more popular since.  It has an odd style to it which makes it look like a cheezy 1980’s sitcom.  There is intentionally bad dialogue, jokes, editing and other jokes which make it so over the top yet enjoyable.

While there were only a few episodes I think this might have been a good thing as they might have tried too hard and ruined the series by continuing with the gag.

Here’s a clip of the first episode.  If you enjoy it, you will probably be able to find the rest on YouTube.

Every South Park Episode Online

April 1, 2008

 southparkwallpaper1024.gif

Every South Park episode is now online and legal for people to watch (here’s the article).  I’m a huge fan of the show even though I have only like one episode from this season so far.  Who can’t like a reference to the 1981 film “Heavy Metal” or saying you can get high off cat piss?

I was disappointed when I went to the official site that has every episode online as you can not watch them in Canada.  However this site also seems to have every episode online and you can watch them regardless of your country.
